Training Programme: EVENT 1 - A Retrospective

Training Programme: EVENT 1 - A Retrospective

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, the HPMC4I research team hosted the EVENT1 of the GlaCerHub Training Programme - a workshop focused on Materialography and Ceramography – Advanced Methods of Material Analysis

The event covered the comprehensive process from sample preparation to advanced methods of optical and mechanical material analysis.

Under the guidance of renowned researchers from the HPMC4I group at CEITEC BUT, Dr. Pavel Gejdoš and Dr. Martin Juliš, and utilizing their perfectly equipped laboratories, workshop participants were impressed by the knowledge and expertise of the instructor.

Participants Feedback

Here are the impressions from participants about the benefits of this productive workshop:

Mohammed Boujida:

"Attending the Metallographic samples preparation training by Dr. Gejdoš was an invaluable experience for me. The training provided profound insights into the behavior of different materials and how it correlates with the essential steps of preparation—cutting, grinding, mounting, and polishing. This understanding has equipped me with the skills to tailor sample preparation techniques effectively, ensuring high-quality microscope observations. The comprehensive approach and practical knowledge gained during the training have been immensely beneficial, enhancing my ability to prepare samples with precision and confidence. It was a truly rewarding experience that will undoubtedly contribute to my future work."

Ertugrul Varlik:

„I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Pavel Gejdoš, Dr. Martin Juliš, and the HPMC4I team for organizing the invaluable two-day workshop on material analysis held on 15–16 April 2025 at CEITEC BUT.

Dr. Gejdoš’s step-by-step demonstrations, from mounting and polishing to microscopic examination, were clear and insightful. The hands-on sessions, which focused on microstructure observation and evaluation using light microscopy, also proved particularly valuable. These experiences have significantly strengthened my confidence in analyzing my materials, and I believe these skills will enhance the accuracy and reliability of my research.“

Abel W. Ourgessa:

„The event was interesting and informative. We learned the detailed steps of cutting, grinding, mounting, and polishing samples to prepare them for high-quality microscopic analysis. Additionally, it was fascinating to explore the operating principles of various microscopic instruments used for specific types of analysis and image enhancement.

Dr.  Pavel Gejdos demonstrated a high level of expertise. He clearly explained and showed the fundamental steps of sample preparation and analysis. He has deep knowledge and clearly explains all the parameters while maintaining a clean and organized demonstration process.“

Lucie Mařáková:

"EVENT 1, focusing on materialography and light microscopy, was a well organised and effective event, combining theoretical foundations with practical, hands-on training. Activities included precise sample cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing and microscopic observation. The interpretation of microstructural features under various imaging techniques was also explained. This workshop, led by Pavel Gejdoš and Martin Juliš, gave me a deep insight into the principles and techniques of material characterisation and sample preparation. The workshop was also relevant for both beginners and those wishing to deepen their knowledge of materialography."

Daniel Valášek:

"The training programme, which focused on materialography, was very useful in providing a general overview of sample preparation procedures, from the selection of representative areas to the observation of polished surfaces. In addition, the expertise of the workshop lecturers was of great benefit to me when discussing sample preparation difficulties encountered during my research. Several advanced machines used for sample preparation were demonstrated, as well as a light microscope and a laser confocal microscope used for sample observation."

Marek Rotter:

"The completed seminar was very beneficial for me. Although I have some basic experience with sample preparation, the examples provided were enriching and confirmed my understanding of practical procedures in the field. I appreciate that possible errors and associated artifacts were pointed out, including specific advice on how to prevent or at least limit these problems. Last but not least, I value the human approach of the trainers, their clear explanations, and practical demonstrations, which helped me better understand the material covered."

The EVENT 1 workshop's blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience clearly resonated with participants across various research backgrounds, providing them with valuable skills that will enhance the quality and reliability of their scientific work. As evidenced by the enthusiastic feedback, this training represents exactly the kind of practical, expert-led educational opportunity that advances both individual capabilities and collective excellence within our scientific community.
