CEITEC BUT Scientists Showcase Transformation Experiments at 2024 Researchers' Night

The Advanced Ceramics Research Groups from CEITEC BUT captivated the public during the 2024 Researchers' Night with an exciting series of experiments and demonstrations based on this year's theme: Transformation.

Experiments and Transformations on Display:

Our scientists curated an engaging lineup of experiments designed to align with the theme of "Transformation".

"Ceramic" research groups RG201 & RG211 showcase @Researchers' Night

These included:

  • Nitinol Wire: Showcasing structural transformations in shape-memory alloys.
  • Hot Ice: A fascinating sodium acetate liquid-to-solid transformation with the heat effects.
  • Caramelizing Sugar: Using heat to illustrate the transformation of sugar molecules.
  • Highly Dense, Transparent-Al2O3 Ceramics: Demonstrating the process of turning white powder into transparent ceramics.
  • Color Transformations in Tea: Observing molecular changes in Butterfly Pea Tea, Earl Grey Tea, and Hibiscus Tea under acidic and alkaline conditions.

While most experiments could be easily replicated at home, the creation of transparent ceramics remained a lab-exclusive demonstration.

However, several attendees left with samples of Butterfly Pea Tea to try their own transformation experiments at home.

Engaging Lab Tour and Interactive Quiz

The event was further enriched by a tour of our state-of-the-art laboratories, where visitors learned about the advanced equipment used in ceramic research. Attendees also participated in a fun quiz, testing their knowledge on the different volume of titanium dioxide sample powders, despite each weighing exactly 2 grams.

Out of 32 responses, 16 correctly identified the reason for the difference: B - the particle size of the powders is different. Three lucky winners received prizes courtesy of CEITEC BUT and GlaCerHub.

Thank You for Your Participation!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all visitors, young and old, for joining us. Special thanks go to CEITEC BUT for their support. We are already looking forward to next year's Researchers' Night, where we will once again bring science closer to the public.
